The dreams of opposition leader in Ingushetia, a Russian Federation republic in the Caucasus, came true last night – Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev has accepted resignation of Murat Zyazikov, the republic’s President. Medvedev also appointed Yunus-bek Yevkurov, a military officer and ethnic Ingush, as interim leader.
Speaking to the media after his resignation, Zyazikov said he would soon be transferred to Moscow to take up a post at some federal institution. The ex-president did not specify what made him resign, but stresses there had been “many things done” for Ingushetia’s economy and social welfare during his tenure.
Magomet Khazbiev, one of Ingushetia’s opposition leaders, said the news of Zyazikov’s resignation was accepted by many in the republic “withy jubilation”. “People are going aout in the streets, stopping their cars and dancing Lezginka (a popular traditional dance)”, Khazbiev said.
